Alterations

Alterations cover a wide range of adjustments: hemming, taking in or letting out seams, shortening sleeves, tapering, and waistband work. Most Mount Gravatt customers need this when off-the-rack clothing fits in one dimension but not another, or for formal wear, school uniforms, or work clothing.

You bring the garment in, get measured or try it on, and the tailor marks the adjustment with chalk or pins. The work is completed and pressed, and you try the garment on again before leaving to check the fit.

Adjusting Hems

Hem adjustment means changing the finished length of a garment, either taking it up or letting it down. Most people need this when trousers are bought a size long, a dress falls the wrong length, or jeans need shortening after a fresh purchase.

We measure and mark the new length while you're wearing the garment, unpick the existing hem, cut away any excess fabric, and re-stitch it with the method suited to the fabric, whether that's a blind hem, a topstitch, or an overlock finish, then press it flat.

Tapering

Tapering is reshaping the body of a garment through the waist, chest, sleeve or leg so it follows the wearer's actual shape rather than the size chart it was cut to. It usually suits someone with a slim frame swimming in a shirt, or trousers that fit the waist but balloon through the leg.

The garment is tried on first, so the tailor can see exactly where the excess sits. Pins go in along the seam; the new seam line is marked, and after unpicking the old seam, we re-sew along the new line and press it flat before a final fitting.

Common Questions About Our Alteration Services

  • What types of garments can you work on?

Most everyday garments can be altered, including trousers, jeans, skirts, dresses, jackets, and shirts, in both casual and professional fabrics. Bring the item in and the team will confirm what is possible after checking the fabric and construction.
  • How long does a typical job take from drop-off to collection?

Turnaround depends on the service and how busy the shop is that day. Simple hem adjustments are often finished quickly, while tapering or more involved alteration work takes longer. A realistic time estimate is given when the garment is dropped off.
  • Do you alter clothing for children, teenagers, and older adults?

Yes, the shop works with customers of all ages, from teenagers needing school formal adjustments to older adults having favourite garments brought back into shape. The alteration is based on how the garment fits the wearer, not the customer's age.
  • How far will you travel, or how far can customers travel to use your services?

Stich n Go does not travel to customers; all work is done in-store at 9 Tryon St, Upper Mount Gravatt. Customers regularly travel in from Mansfield, Wishart, MacGregor, Sunnybank, Carindale, and other nearby southside suburbs.
